Getting Connected With Windows98
Step 1: Eliminating other WINSOCK.DLLs
- Click Start.
- Click Find.
- Select Files or Folders.
- Type
WINSOCK.DLL in the Named Box.
- Make sure Look In is set to the
C: Drive.
- Click Find Now.
The Microsoft WINSOCK.DLL is in the \WINDOWS\ Directory.
All other WINSOCK.DLL files should be renamed to WINSOCK.OLD
by clicking on the filename and selecting Rename from the File pull-down menu.
Step 2: Making sure Dial-Up Networking is installed
- Click Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Control Panel.
- Double-click the Add/Remove Programs Icon.
- Select the Windows Setup Tab.
- Single-click Communications, then press the Details button.
- The Dial-Up Networking item should be checked. If it isn't, check it.
You may be prompted for your Windows98 CD-ROM. Click OK.
Note: The following steps assume you have the Dial-Up Networking support installed.
Step 3: Making sure the Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP Protocol are installed
- Click Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Control Panel.
- Double-click the Network Icon.
- Verify the Dial-Up Adapter is present. If it isn't:
- Click Add.
- Double-Click Adapter.
- Scroll down the list and select Microsoft.
- Choose the Dial-Up Adapter and click OK.
You may be prompted for your Windows98 CD-ROM. Click OK.
- Verify the TCP/IP Protocol (or TCP/IP -> Dialup Adapter) is present. If it
isn't:
- Click Add.
- Double-Click Protocol.
- Scroll down the list and select Microsoft.
- Choose TCP/IP and click OK.
You may be prompted for your Windows98 CD-ROM. Click OK.
- Verify the TCP/IP Properties
- Select the TCP/IP from the list of installed network components.
- Click on Properites
- IP Address tab: Obtain IP address automatically should be selected.
- WINS Configuration tab: Disable WINS Resolution should be selected.
- Gateway tab: There should be no installed gateways.
- DNS Configuration tab: Disable DNS should be selected.
- Click OK until you are asked to restart the system. After you restart, proceed
to the next step. You may be asked fopr the Windows98 CD-ROM.
Step 4: Setting up the connection
- Double-click the My Computer Icon.
- Double-click the Dial-Up Networking Icon.
- Type in abingdon.net for the name of the computer you want to connect to.
- Your modem should already be displayed. If it isn't, contact your modem or computer manufacturer for
instructions on installing your modem.
- Click Next>.
- Put 309 into the Area Code field.
Type in the phone number -
462-5550
- Click Next>, then Finish.
- Single-click the new abingdon.net icon with the RIGHT mouse button, and select Properties.
- In the Phone Number section, make sure the Use Country Code and Area Code option
is checked.
- Click the Server Type tab.
- The Type of Dial-Up Server should be set to PPP: Internet,Windows NT Server, Windows 98
- In the Advanced Options Section, make sure:
- Log On to Network should NOT be Checked
- Enable Software Compression SHOULD be Checked
- Require Encrypted Password should NOT be Checked
- Require data encryption should NOT be Checked
- Record a log file for this connection should NOT be Checked
- In the Allowed network protocols section, make sure
- NetBEUI should NOT be checked
- IPX/SPX Compatible should NOT be checked
- TCP/IP SHOULD be checked
- Click on TCP/IP Settings.
- Make sure Server assigned IP address is selected.
- Make sure Server assigned name server addresses is selected.
- Use IP Header Compression SHOULD be Checked.
- Use Default Gateway on Remote Network SHOULD be Checked.
- Click OK twice.
Step Five: Connecting!
- Double-click the new abingdon.net Icon.
- Click on the Dial Properties button
- Make sure the Area code is correct.
- If you need to dial a number to access an outside line, enter it in the appropriate places
- If you need to disable call waiting, make sure the box is checked and the appropriate code is selected.
- Click OK.
- Enter your Username and Password in the appropriate areas and check the Save Password box.
- Click on the Connect button.
Final Step: Fine tuning the settings
There are some things you can do to fine tune your settings. Many of the specific instructions depend on which version
of Windows98 you have and which Internet appications you have installed.
- To have your connection start when you run an Internet appliction:
- Click on Start --> Settings --> Control Panel
- Double click on Internet Options (may be called just Internet in some setups)
- Select the Connection tab and change the appropriate settings.
- To have your computer to not prompt you to connect:
- When the connection comes up, there should be an option to connect automatically
