FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

  1. How does DSL compare to a Dialup Connection?
Dialup connections operate at a maximum speed of 53 kbps under ideal conditions.  The average dialup connection is about 40 kbps.  With Infobahn Outfitters' residential DSL your maximum download speed will be much faster -- up to 1 Mbps.  Your maximum upload speed will be 128 kbps. And if you have a second phone line just for Internet service, you will no longer need it, because DSL can share the phone line with voice service.
  2. What equipment is required?
A DSL modem is required and is provided. (Your dialup modem is a different kind of modem and will not work with DSL). Your computer must have a USB port or a network card (NIC).  If you don't have a USB port or NIC, we can install a NIC for you for an additional fee.  If you want to connect more than one computer, you may need a local area network (LAN). (Some DSL modems are dual-connect and will simultaneosly support both a USB and an Ethernet connection.) We sell and install LANs.  Contact us for details and pricing.
  3. Does this service use a phone line?
Yes. However, you will be able to receive and place phone calls through your phone line while your computer is connected to the Internet. The fees for DSL service are in addition to the fee for your regular phone service. Note that some special business services (hunt groups, rollovers, PBX, etc) require special consideration prior to installation.
  4. Do I need two phone lines?
No. With DSL, your standard telephone line supplies both DSL and telephone service.
  5. What about security for always on systems?
We recommend that all users use reputable anti-virus software.  We also highly recommend you install and use a firewall to protect you from unwanted Internet traffic.
  6. What speeds will I get?
Actual speeds may be less than the maximum rate and vary based on a number of factors, including the capability of your phone line, the performance of your computer, Internet congestion, and the speeds of web sites you access.  This is a consumer-grade service and is not meant to replace high-capacity dedicated service.  If you need high capacity service, please contact us about our business grade services.
  7. Can I connect more than one computer?
Yes, but you may need additional equipment (hub, switch or router). Contact us if you have questions.
  8. Do I get my own IP address?
No, only dynamic IP addresses are included in the package.
  9. Can I keep my old email address?
If your previous address was from Infobahn Outfitters (e.g. myaccount@abingdon.net), you may continue to use it.  If you are switching from another provider, check with your previous provider to determine your options and any fees.
  10. Is a contract required?
We do require a contract to configure the service. The minimum term is one month. However, some special offers do require a longer term commitment.
  11. Where will my bills come from?
Infobahn Outfitters will bill you for the Internet access service and the phone company will bill you for the special telephone access line.
  12. Can a business purchase the residential package?
Absolutely. If the services included in the residential package meet the needs of your business, you may purchase the residential package.
